The bodhran, the traditional frame drum of Ireland has remained unaltered since the early part of the Christian era.These traditional frame drums were made with goat or sheep skin that was stretched over the drum and then riveted along the edge. One or two cross-pieces inside the open back of the drum serve as a hand or wrist hold.
Played with a beater, also called a cipan or tipper, it is the basis for the unusual sound of traditional Celtic music.

On the faculty of the Music School in Providence, he also teaches workshops on the bodhran. Mance has developed a serious, professional approach to playing the bodhran.
